A government official has dismissed as false and misleading social media claims circulating in Thailand saying that Prime Minister Hun Manet plans to withdraw Cambodia’s case from the International Court of Justice (ICJ) over disputed border areas in favour of bilateral negotiations.
The claims, widely shared online specially by facebook account Wassana Nuruam, asserted that Cambodia would drop legal proceedings concerning Ta Moan Thom Temple, Ta Moan Tauch Temple, Ta Krabei Temple and the Mom Bei area, and instead rely solely on talks through the Joint Boundary Commission to reclaim the land.
However, the official categorically denied the fake news, stressing that the Prime Minister has never made any statement about withdrawing a case from the ICJ.
“This claim is false and misleading. Prime Minister Hun Manet has never stated that Cambodia would withdraw any case from the International Court of Justice,” the official said.
The official warned that fabricating such statements is irresponsible and risks misleading the public on a sensitive national issue.
Reaffirming the government’s position, the official said Cambodia remains consistent in pursuing the resolution of border issues with Thailand through all appropriate channels, including bilateral mechanisms such as the Joint Boundary Commission (JBC), as well as international legal frameworks when necessary.
The statement also called on public figures and social media influencers to verify information before sharing it, noting that the spread of false narratives could undermine constructive dialogue between the two countries and damage public trust.
In June 2025, the Royal Government of Cambodia officially notified the ICJ in The Hague of its intention to seek a peaceful, legally binding resolution for four specific disputed areas.
