At Dushanbe International Airport, customs officers stopped an attempt to import counterfeit state license plates into Tajikistan.
As reported in Regional Customs Department for DushanbeOn June 12, during an inspection of the luggage of a passenger on a Moscow-Dushanbe flight, a set of license plates was discovered.
An examination by the Republican Center for Forensic Expertise and Criminalistics of the Ministry of Justice of the Republic of Tatarstan confirmed that the numbers are fake. Experts have identified a number of differences from official samples, including the quality of the metal, the location of symbols, the absence of security elements and a barcode.
Based on this fact, on June 25, the Transport Prosecutor’s Office opened a criminal case under Part 2 of Article 212¹ (“Driving a vehicle with someone else’s state registration number, illegal circulation of counterfeit vehicle registration numbers”) of the Criminal Code of Tajikistan. The materials were transferred to the Department of Internal Affairs at the transport of Dushanbe International Airport for a preliminary investigation.
Let us remind you that earlier Tajikistan has tightened liability for the use of foreign and counterfeit state registration license plates.
Amendments to the Code of Administrative Offenses and the Criminal Code came into force in 2024. For driving a car with someone else’s license plates, the fine was tripled – up to 2040–3400 somoni with deprivation of the right to drive for one year.
At the same time, criminal liability for the production, storage, use and transfer of counterfeit state license plates was strengthened. For such actions, fines of up to 68 thousand somoni or imprisonment for up to two years are provided, and if fake numbers are used to commit or conceal another crime – up to 5 years of imprisonment.
