DZERZHINSK DISTRICT, 25 June (BelTA) – Belarus and Russia have reached a high level of self-sufficiency in key agricultural products, said Belan Khamchiev, Deputy Chair of the Federation Council Committee on Agriculture and Food Policy and Environmental Management, during the session High-performance agribusiness sector: conditions and opportunities at the current stage of the 13th Forum of Regions of Belarus and Russia, BelTA has learned.
Belan Khamchiev noted that Russian participants of the forum sincerely value the allied relations with Belarus and expressed appreciation for the high level of organization of the event. Among the priorities in the agro-industrial sector, he highlighted the introduction of innovative technologies, the latest achievements of sectoral science, and the training of highly qualified specialists.
“Ensuring the food security of the Union State [of Belarus and Russia] within the framework of forming a unified agricultural policy is one of the most important tasks in the new economic conditions shaped by globalization, climate change, instability in the global food market, restricted access to food and production resources, and large‑scale sanctions pressure from unfriendly countries,” Belan Khamchiev said.
According to him, the agro-industrial complex is one of the strategic elements of the economy. Its effective development has made it possible to achieve a high level of self-sufficiency in basic agricultural products and food, as well as to build significant export potential. At the same time, increasing the Union State’s contribution to global food security remains an important issue.
“At the same time, the need to strengthen the resilience of the agricultural sector to various risks, threats, and challenges is growing, which objectively requires closer cooperation between Russia and Belarus within the Union State. We need to develop unified approaches to solving common problems in the agricultural sector, taking into account changes in agricultural production technologies and digital transformation,” Belan Khamchiev emphasized.
He added that the joint projects and cooperation plays an important role in achieving technological sovereignty and in enabling domestic producers to enter new export markets with high value-added products. It is important to combine scientific potential to create competitive plant varieties, animal breeds, and advanced technical equipment, and to intensify cooperation in veterinary and phytosanitary supervision. “Solving these tasks will become a serious stimulus for the growth of the agro-industrial complex. Thanks to the forum, we have the opportunity to jointly determine priorities and develop measures that would create conditions for sustainable development,” Belan Khamchiev added.
