The Professional Association of Banks and Financial Institutions announced the approval of a banking duty system every Saturday, from nine in the morning until twelve in the afternoon, starting on July 10, 2026, in a step aimed at improving citizens’ access to banking services and facilitating the implementation of their financial transactions.
It was stated in a correspondence sent by the association to the general managers of banks, at the request of the Bank of Algeria, that these measures fall within the framework of an effort to develop banking services and bring them closer to customers, by allowing an additional period of work during the weekend.
The same source explained that this decision will be accompanied by the reorganization of the working hours of the employees concerned with this shift, in order to ensure respect for the legal weekly work period stipulated in the applicable legislation, especially Law No. 90-11 of April 21, 1990, amended and supplemented.
In this context, the association called on banks to adopt internal arrangements that allow maintaining the legal hourly volume, including reducing four working hours during Thursdays, or adopting any other regulatory formula that achieves the required balance between continuity of service and respect for the law.
The correspondence stressed the need to take all necessary regulatory measures to ensure the continuity and quality of services provided to customers, noting that these arrangements will enter into force starting from the specified date.
It should be noted that banks in Algeria were closing their doors during the weekend (Friday and Saturday), before this new measure was adopted, which is expected to contribute to improving the flexibility of banking services and bringing them closer to the needs of citizens.
