Today’s latest threats by US President Donald Trump directed at Iran have increased the tensions of the already tense negotiating teams of the two countries in Switzerland.
Part of the Iranian media they announced first that the delegation of Iran left the talks because of Trump’s threats, and then new information appeared that pthe negotiations were only pausedafter almost 80 minutes of talks.
Negotiations between Iran and the United States in Switzerland “have been suspended, but are not over,” an Iranian source told the Reuters news agency.
Trump with new threats
US President Donald Trump said today that the US could “take control” of the Strait of Hormuz if no agreement is reached with Iran.
“We may have to take over the strait. If they don’t get a deal, we’re going to charge a toll,” Trump told Fox News.
He added that, according to him, he told the Iranian side that closing the strait would not be in their interest.
“If you close it, you won’t have a country anymore. You won’t even go back to your country,” Trump said, adding that the United States could become what he called the “guardian angel” of the strait and would then control 20 percent of the oil that passes through this key maritime route.
Trump: If Iran does not immediately stop its allies in Lebanon, we will hit it very hard
In a post on his social network Truth Social, Trump said Iran must rein in its allies in Lebanon, warning that otherwise a strong military response would follow.
“If they don’t, we’re going to hit Iran hard again, like we did last week, and even harder,” Trump said.
IRIB: “There was no discussion about Iran’s nuclear program”
In the first round of talks between the US and Iranian delegations in Switzerland, there were no talks on Iran’s nuclear program, but the focus was on a 14-point memorandum of understanding, with special emphasis on the situation in Lebanon, Iranian state TV IRIB reported.
According to IRIB, the first round of talks lasted about 80 minutes and was focused on the aforementioned memorandum, while issues of Iran’s nuclear program were not on the agenda.
