On 1 June, the Danish Transport Agency approved an extended and more detailed apron management at Qaqortoq Airport. The approval was a prerequisite for handling international traffic.
Greenland Airports says on Facebook that the Swedish Transport Agency has approved the apron management at Qaqortoq Airport.
The company calls the approval a key piece in the work to make the airport a strong traffic hub in South Greenland.
Greenland Airports elaborates that apron management is about keeping track of which planes and helicopters must stop where and when, and about handling them safely on the ground.
Prerequisite for international traffic
In front of Sermitsiaq, the airport company elaborates that the approval came back on June 1, and it was a prerequisite for Qaqortoq Airport to be approved for handling international traffic on June 4.
– The airport was per 16.4. approved for apron management with domestic/AirGreenland traffic. The apron management that has now been approved is an extended and more detailed model, says Greenland Airports in a written comment to Sermitsiaq.
Special requirements
According to Greenland Airports, mixed traffic at the airport in South Greenland with helicopters as well as smaller and larger aircraft makes special demands:

I am very proud of the team at Qaqortoq, who have made a huge effort to make this a success and helped – in close cooperation with the Swedish Transport Agency – to ensure that the approval has been received,” says Anna Villefrance, program manager Qaqortoq for Greenland Airports.
The airport at Qaqortoq opened on 16 April, but only Air Greenland’s aircraft could use the airport. On 4 June, approval came from the Swedish Transport Agency regarding international flights, so that Icelandair could carry out its first flight to Qaqortoq Airport.
