The Ghanaian footballer Dominic Frimpongof Berekum Chelsea, lost his life in the shooting committed during the armed robbery that his team suffered when he was returning by coach from playing a first division match in the African country against the FC Samartex.
The Ghana Football Federation (GFA) reported the death of Frimpong, 20, yesterday, Sunday, in a statement issued this Monday in which he noted that the police are investigating the circumstances of the incident.
The striker was seriously injured and was taken to a hospital in the town of Bibiani, in the northwest of Ghanawhere they certified his death, according to local media.
According to the first conclusions, the event occurred on the highway between Bibiani and Goasonear Ahyiresu, when several armed men blocked the road to carry out the robbery and it was during the struggle that the footballer was shot and left badly injured.
The GFA has expressed his “deep dismay and sadness” over the death of what he defines as “a promising young talent” of the ghanaian football and has committed to reviewing and reinforcing the security measures of clubs that travel to compete in national competitions to prevent new incidents.
“We urge that all necessary measures be taken to ensure that justice is done,” adds the statement from the federal entity.
Frimpong had scored two goals in the thirteen games he had played with the Berekum Chelseawhere he arrived at the beginning of this year on loan from Aduana Stars, also from the country’s highest football category, located in the western part of Africa. EFE
