US President Donald Trump has announced that he is raising tariffs on cars and trucks imported from the European Union to 25%, arguing that the EU is not complying with a trade agreement signed last summer, which established a 15% quota.
Trump did not specify what legal authority he would use to raise the tariffs – the Supreme Court earlier this year struck down the “reciprocal” tariffs imposed under the IEEPA Act.
The original agreement, known as the “Thornberry Agreement” after Trump’s golf course in Scotland, contained a 15% quota on most goods. Europe has already warned that the trade framework could be in jeopardy.
