Mixed Lockdown on Wall Street; Trump threatens tariffs on the European Union

Trade overview: current reports, trends, indices, stock prices, bonds, foreign exchange and commodities and analyst recommendations

    23:00

Mixed closing on Wall Street: Dow Jones closed down 0.29%, S&P 500 closed up 0.29% and Nasdaq closed up 0.89%.

    22:00

Wall Street moved to a mixed trend: Dow Jones loses about 0.2%, S&P 500 rises about 0.4% and Nasdaq rises about 0.9%.

US President Donald Trump announced that he is not satisfied with the new proposal to end the war from Iran, saying that the country “wants to reach an agreement, but I am not satisfied with it.” As a result, oil prices rose slightly from their daily lows. WTI crude oil contracts fell 3% and traded above $101 per barrel. Brent oil contracts, the international benchmark, retreated 2% to a level above $108 per barrel.

The events follow a record-breaking trading session in which the S&P 500 topped the 7,200-point mark for the first time in history. That helped the S&P 500 and Nasdaq — which also hit a new high — secure their best monthly performance since 2020. The Dow Jones, meanwhile, posted its best monthly performance since November 2024.

    20:20

US President Donald Trump has announced that he is raising tariffs on cars and trucks imported from the European Union to 25%, arguing that the EU is not complying with a trade agreement signed last summer, which established a 15% quota.

Trump did not specify what legal authority he would use to raise the tariffs – the Supreme Court earlier this year struck down the “reciprocal” tariffs imposed under the IEEPA Act.

The original agreement, known as the “Thornberry Agreement” after Trump’s golf course in Scotland, contained a 15% quota on most goods. Europe has already warned that the trade framework could be in jeopardy.

Green screens on Wall Street: Nasdaq leads with 1.1% gain, S&P 500 rises 0.7%, but Dow Jones is steady. The record-breaking run is leading stocks to their longest weekly rising streak since 2024, amid hopes of a deal to end the Iran war.

Among the causes of Wall Street’s highs – a particularly strong reporting season: afterdark has become another giant that provides impressive results, the main indices continue to build on the strong rally, while the price of oil retreated following reports that Iran offered a new proposal to end the war.

In addition, the market seems to reward investments in artificial intelligence that show short-term monetization (the Magnificent Seven trend), as seen with Alphabet, and punishes investments without clear returns. Meta stopped her falls, andNvidia rose over 1%.

Brent oil fell below $110 a barrel, paring weekly gains, after Iran responded to US peace proposals. However, oil still posted a second straight weekly gain. The closure of the Strait of Hormuz caused a reduction of 9.1 million barrels per day in April – the largest disruption of global oil supplies on record. Goldman Sachs expects Brent to average above $100 per barrel in 2026.

WTI crude has risen 77% in the past year, and is finding support above $103, with a target of $116.50 if it breaks above $108.

The price of gold was about $4,592 per ounce in the morning – down about $50 compared to yesterday, but up $1,351 compared to last year. Gold faces a second week of declines as higher energy prices increase inflation concerns and reinforce the expectation that central banks will be required to keep interest rates high – or even raise them – in 2027.

    19:00

The gains on Wall Street moderate slightly: Dow Jones is stable, S&P 500 is up about 0.7% and Nasdaq is up about 1.2%.

After publishing strong reports: Stock oracle jumps by more than 6%. Also rising sharply: dark , Intel andTesla .

    17:30

A positive but cautious atmosphere on Wall Street – the results of the reports of dark And a number of other giants ignite optimism, in addition to the drop in oil prices amid signs of the end of the war with Iran. On the other hand, the market begins the month of May with the question of whether the increases of April will continue – or whether the “Sell in May” principle will come true.

The S&P 500 is up about 0.6% to 7,255 points. The Dow Jones gains about 0.45% and stands at 49,877 points. Nasdaq rises by about 0.8% to 25,092 points. Russell 2000 rises by 0.2%.
