The Secretary of Energy of the United States, Chris Wright, stated that “there will be elections in Venezuela“, although he admitted that there is still no date set for the elections.
He explained that the administration of US President Donald Trump, works to create the conditions economic and political processes necessary to achieve this process.
Wright spoke during an interview with Univision journalist Edwin Pitti, in which he also referred to the agreement announced in Houston with Continental Resources, company that – as detailed – will invest close to 2,000 million dollars in an oil development project in Venezuela.
The consultation arose after Pitti questioned the official about the progress of the oil agreements while, in his opinion, Venezuelans do not have a clear path to democratic elections.
In this sense, Wright listed several conditions that, he said, Washington considers essential before reaching the elections.
“Hundreds of political prisoners have been released”he stated, and also mentioned the participation in reconciliation talks of what he identified as the legislature linked to the opposition leader Juan Guaidó.
He also cited the need to obtain electoral rollsstrengthen confidence in the rule of law and stabilize the economy to avoid a scenario of chaos.
“So yes, the current focus is on the economy and stability, but the ultimate goal is to create the conditions for elections,” said the Secretary of Energy, who insisted that the decision on the country’s political future must ultimately correspond to Venezuelans. “At the end of the day, the Venezuelan people must choose how their government and country will be run”he expressed.
Wright closed with one of the most powerful phrases of the interview when describing the process that, according to him, the country currently faces.
“We are trying to repair 25 years of authoritarian socialism imposed from above. You can’t just do that overnight,” he sentenced.
