The former president of the United States George W. Bush included Maria Corina Machado among the figures portrayed in his new artistic and editorial projecttitled The Call of Freedom: Portraits of Political Prisoners and Dissidents (The call of freedom: Portraits of political prisoners and dissidents).
The work brings together 44 color portraits taken by Bush himselfaccompanied by the stories of people from different parts of the world who have faced persecution, prison or exile due to their political positions, religious beliefs, gender or ethnic identity. The project was announced by Bush as a recognition of the courage and resilience of dissidents and political prisoners. In his message, the former president noted that he hopes the paintings and the stories that accompany them inspire other people and convey the importance of supporting those who seek to live in freedom.
The relationship between Bush and Machado dates back to 2005when the then US president received the Venezuelan leader at the White House.
The Call of Freedom will be published on March 9, 2027 and the date will coincide with the opening of an exhibition of the portraits at the George W. Bush Presidential Center, in Dallas, Texas. The book is now available for pre-sale.
