KABUL (Pajhwok): The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) has said it stands with the people of Afghanistan in addressing persistent drug-related challenges, emerging threats and in finding innovative solutions.
In a message issued today, June 26, on the occasion of the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, the agency said its programmes in Afghanistan focus on prevention, treatment, care and recovery support for people affected by drug addiction.
UNODC added that, alongside these efforts, it also supports the creation of sustainable livelihoods for communities facing economic hardship after moving away from opium poppy cultivation.
The statement comes as the United Nations has repeatedly stressed the need to continue supporting drug control programmes, addiction treatment and the provision of alternative livelihood opportunities for farmers in Afghanistan.
