France’s state-owned energy company has temporarily shut down two nuclear reactors as a precautionary measure due to record heat that has already claimed lives. He informs about it “Armenpress”citing Euronews.
The decommissioned reactors are located at the Nogent-sur-Seine nuclear power plant on the banks of the Seine River, not far from Paris, and at the Buget plant on the Rhône River in the southeast of the country.
Last year, these facilities accounted for nearly 70% of France’s electricity production. Despite the outages, the French electricity grid operator said France has sufficient generation capacity to meet electricity demand, including in the event of individual facility outages.
Anomalous heat has been observed in France since June 17. Due to this, the work of almost 10,000 educational institutions was stopped or the timetable was changed, and the traffic of railway transport was limited. At least 18 people have died due to the abnormal heat, and at least 42 others have drowned in pools, also attributed to the effects of the hot weather.
The newspaper Le Parisien, citing data from the National Agency for Temperature Measurements, reported that June 24 became the hottest day in the history of meteorological observations in France. On that day, the average temperature in the entire republic was 30 degrees. Temperatures reached 40 degrees Celsius in more than 50 departments, with some places reaching 42 degrees Celsius, according to the Météo-France national weather service.
