A growing paper trail is drawing tough questions about how public money is being spent and who is benefiting. Leaked financial documents are now putting the family of Belmopan Area Representative Oscar Mira under intense public scrutiny, with millions of dollars in payments tied to state contracts. At the heart of the controversy is Mira, now on administrative leave, as scrutiny deepens over deals tied to his relatives. The records, many connected to the Ministry of Defense, bring up concerns about openness and responsibility at the highest levels. Tonight, News Five’s Paul Lopez takes a closer look at the scandal and the calls for answers.

Home Affairs Minister Oscar Mira, now on administrative leave, previously told the House of Representatives that he comes from a large family. Back on March twenty-fifth, he revealed he has ten siblings, a detail now drawing renewed attention amid the ongoing audit into the Ministry of Defense.

“I bless, not only by the love of the people of Belmopan, but its ten of us, ten, times two, times three, because my nephews turn eighteen too. And when we come, we come as a team. Dah no joke.”
For weeks now, five of Minister Oscar Mira’s siblings have been caught in the middle of a firestorm, linked to millions in questionable government payouts. Many of those transactions trace back to the Ministry of Defense, where Mira once served as Minister of State, placing the focus squarely on his family’s financial ties. News Five has confirmed that Stanley Mira earned north of four hundred and thirty-five thousand dollars. Stanley and Brian Mira’s company, MP Farms, have taken in more than five point seven million dollars in government payouts. Jenny Mira has received over one point seven million dollars, and newly leaked Smart Stream invoices show that Fast Construction, a company with Keith Mira listed as a Senior Project Manager, has earned upwards of one point five million dollars. Combined, the Mira family has collected more than nine point four million dollars, and that is just the extent of the invoices that have been leaked. Cyrus Mira came into the picture on Wednesday, when this question was posed to Commissioner of Police, Dr. Richard Rosado.

“Did Minister Mira at any time instruct the police department to acquire AC servicing from his brother Cyrus or FT Williams.”

“I can say that at no time did the minister or anyone instruct the police department to purchase form any supplier. The way the police department is structured, we have the accounting officer, which is the CO. the CO delegate authority to myself and my four deputies. My four deputies oversee the different unit that falls under them. They have different supplier. I do not know the specific suppliers that each one engage, but we have a number of suppliers that work with the department.”
From modest beginnings to newfound wealth, the Mira family’s rise is now drawing intense public attention. Once known for their humble roots, several of the minister’s siblings are today living the Belizean dream. Many are left asking whether those millions came at the expense of hardworking Belizeans. Did taxpayer dollars play a role? Oscar Mira insists that both he and his family have done nothing wrong.

“How is it that so much of your family members are able to and were able to benefit from so much lucrative government contracts?”

“Tenders are published in the newspaper. Any interested person can apply and pay for that tender. They ten go through a lengthy process. I had no say. I was not part of those committees. If they did so, they did on their own. Not with my influence or anything to do with me.”
Even as the Mira family insists everything was done by the book, the questions aren’t going away anytime soon. Paul Lopez for News Five.
