On Monday, residents of Novobeograd blocks were woken up by thick smoke and the sirens of fire trucks.
A fire broke out in the building of the “Enjub” shopping center in block 45, and 35 firefighters and 11 vehicles went to the scene, Radio Television of Serbia (RTS) reported.
The fire broke out around six o’clock in the morning, and the fire engulfed several shops and the roof of the shopping center.
Two people were injured in the fire and transported to the hospital, N1 television reported unofficial information.
The BBC has been unable to confirm this information.
Three hours after the fire broke out, fire crews are still fighting the fire, but they say the fire is under control.
The police cordoned off the neighborhood where the shopping center is located, and local residents gathered to see off the action of the firefighters.
Residents of the surrounding buildings were warned to close their windows, and thick black smoke was visible from several parts of the city.
The “Enjub” shopping center was opened in 1995 and has around 400 stores.
Five years ago, just two kilometers from “Enjub”, in block 70, another shopping center burned down.
Then, after six hours, firefighters managed to put out the fire, but the building was completely destroyed.
