The announced thunderstorm on Sunday afternoon arrived in the north of Croatia, and according to the first information, it was the worst in Varaždin County – hail and heavy rain fell in some parts of the county.

The State Hydrometeorological Institute (DHMZ) issued a red weather warning for the Osijek region for Sunday evening due to the danger of strong winds and an orange weather warning due to thunderstorms, and told citizens to take self-protection measures.
DHMZ emphasized that a sudden turn of the southwest wind to a strong and stormy north wind is expected. “Hurricane gusts are possible in the Danube region, the strongest gusts of wind exceeding 90 kilometers per hour,” they warned.
Citizens were told to take measures for self-protection because there is a risk to personal safety due to uprooted trees, broken branches and flying debris. Damage to structures, disruption of traffic and interruption of energy supply are possible, they say.
For the Osijek region, DHMZ has also issued an orange weather alert due to the threat of thunderstorms.
A local thunderstorm is expected, accompanied by very strong winds, heavy precipitation and hail, especially along the border with Hungary; the strongest gusts of wind exceeding 90 kilometers per hour, while the probability of thunder is greater than 80 percent, say the DHMZ.
The DHMZ has also issued an orange weather alert for thunderstorms for the Zagreb region, and a local thunderstorm is expected, accompanied by very strong wind and hail, and heavy precipitation in a short time, first in Hrvatsko Zagorje, Međimurje and Podravina, and then elsewhere. The strongest gusts of wind exceed 65 kilometers per hour, while the probability of thunder is greater than 80 percent.
Citizens were told to be prepared for strong thunderstorms that can cause great damage and to protect themselves from lightning.
“Damage to property and trees is possible. Local flash floods, stormy gusts of wind and hail are possible. Interruptions in outdoor activities and traffic are possible,” says the DHMZ.
