About 20 people were injured in Tokyo after a man sprayed a substance near an ATM in a shopping center in the Ginza tourist district on Monday (May 25). After reporting the “smell”, the Japanese authorities intervened with numerous fire engines and ambulances.
A Tokyo Police spokesman, Yusuke Koike, told AFP that a man sprayed a substance near an ATM on the ground floor of the building.
A local fire official announced that about “20 people were injured” after a “smell” was reported in this very touristy neighborhood.
By mid-day on Monday, the streets around the building, located in the Ginza shopping district, which is home to many luxury brands, were blocked off after the incident, and fire engines and ambulances lined the street.
Instead, passers-by, mainly tourists, could walk on the sidewalk on the other side of the street.
An AFP journalist at the scene saw two market-goers loaded into ambulances, while firefighters and officials in chemical protective suits took people out of the mall to be examined in specialized vehicles.
Public broadcaster NHK said the injuries appeared to be minor.
The police are investigating the case, a representative of the fire brigade present at the scene announced, without giving details.
