PARAMARIBO — “The police inform the community that they will not tolerate violence or extreme violence by suspects against society in any way, especially against security forces.” The Suriname Police Corps (KPS) wrote this on its website on Thursday evening after the arrest of suspects who had disarmed and shot the 32-year-old police officer RS on June 6 on the Nieuwweergevondenweg near the Ait Nochweg. The officer suffered gunshot wounds to his abdomen and right leg. He was taken to the Emergency Department of the University Hospital Paramaribo in a critical condition, where he is being treated.
The trio – nineteen-year-olds RP, SP and PG, both 22 years old – were handcuffed at separate locations by the Arrest Team (AT) on Wednesday evening and were then transferred to the Capital Crimes Department to be arraigned. After coordination with the Public Prosecution Service, PG was sent home because he appears to have had nothing to do with the case, the KPS reports.
“In no way will violence or extreme violence by suspects against society, in particular against security services, be tolerated”
SP and RP were taken into custody. The KPS says it has strong indications that the young men are “extreme violent people”. It cannot be ruled out that another suspect will be arrested soon. This, just like RP, SP and PG, came into the picture during the investigation by the Capital Crimes department.
