The Russian military has declared a ceasefire for 24 hours between May 8 and 9, thereby confirming the proposal that President Vladimir Putin reportedly raised in talks with Donald Trump last week.
Ukraine initially waited patiently for the announcement, and President Zelenskyy wrote on X that “they cannot afford military equipment and are afraid of drones buzzing over Red Square.”
A ceasefire shows Russian weakness and it is important that the outside world continues to put pressure on Russia, he wrote.
A few hours later, he stated on the same platform that Ukraine had not been notified and questioned “the truthfulness of information in Russian social media” regarding a ceasefire.
“We hereby announce a ceasefire that begins at midnight between May 5 and 6,” he continued.
Russia, for its part, is threatening a “massive missile attack” on Kyiv if Ukraine violates the ceasefire they have declared during Victory Day on May 9, the celebration of the end of World War II, which is seen as one of Russia’s most important holidays.
