In the heart of Manhattan, a red and green tide swept through Times Square. Moroccan flags, songs, slogans and horns punctuated the evening, offering passers-by and tourists an atmosphere worthy of the great times of world football. On the eve of the highly anticipated Morocco-Brazil at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, Moroccan supporters wanted to send a clear message: the Atlas Lions will not play alone.
Coming from the four corners of the United States, but also from Morocco, Europe and other countries, fans transformed the famous New York intersection into a true showcase of Moroccan fervor. Families, young supporters and football enthusiasts found themselves in an atmosphere of celebration and communion, convinced that the national team is capable of successfully entering the competition.
“I came from Brooklyn to express my support for the Moroccan team before their match against Brazil. I wish him good luck,” confides Safia El Bauch, surrounded by her family and children, who have come to share their passion for the Atlas Lions.
Same optimism from Safouat Lakhsassi, arrival from neighboring New Jersey, who believes that the Moroccan selection has all the assets to compete with the Seleção and create the feat.
For some, the journey has been even longer. Badr traveled from Fez especially to support the Atlas Lions. In his eyes, the verdict is already known: victory will be Moroccan.
The craze also goes beyond the borders of the Kingdom. Youssouf Diane, a Guinean national based in the United States, went to Times Square to support Morocco and his favorite player, Achraf Hakimi. “Morocco is a great African football nation. The Atlas Lions showed during the CAN that they are the best team on the continent,” he says, convinced that this World Cup can bring smiles to the national eleven.
Same enthusiasm from Sultane Al Agdi, a Saudi national from Jeddah, admiring the performance of Moroccan football and came to show his support for Mohamed Ouahbi’s men.
The evening was also marked by the notable appearance of Moroccan-American rapper and producer French Montana. His presence among the supporters caused real euphoria, further reinforcing the festive atmosphere which reigned in the famous New York square.
A few hours before the clash against Brazil kicks off, this spectacular mobilization in the heart of New York illustrates the immense anticipation surrounding the Atlas Lions. After having made an entire continent dream during previous international competitions, the Moroccan selection can once again count on exceptional popular support, determined to take it to a new chapter in its world history.
