The International Criminal Court (ICC) says it has no official confirmation of reports that Libyan war crimes suspect Saif al-Nasr Snidel has died.
In a brief statement, the court said it is closely monitoring developments and will seek to verify his fate through the relevant legal channels. It added that any decision regarding judicial proceedings against him depends on the outcome of that verification.
The ICC said proceedings against a suspect can only be halted by judges from the Pre-Trial Chamber after death has been established in line with legal and criminal standards.
Earlier, Libya’s National Institution for Human Rights said it had received credible information that Snidel had been killed in unclear circumstances, and that his body was found at Benghazi Medical Centre.
The ICC unsealed an arrest warrant for Snidel on 8 August 2025, relating to allegations dating back to November 2020.
At the time, the court said he was believed to have been a member of the “Group of Fifty”, linked to the internationally wanted Mahmoud al-Werfalli, a senior figure in Haftar’s militias, who was also killed in unclear circumstances.
Snidel is suspected of committing war crimes, including murder, torture and outrages upon personal dignity in Benghazi and surrounding areas between June 2016 and July 2017, according to the court.
