“In the interest of Iran, the Middle East and the United States, we have communicated to those countries that we will direct their ships safely out of these restricted waters so they can continue their activities freely,” Trump said in a post on the Truth Social social network, adding that “very positive conversations” are underway with Iran that could lead to a win-win outcome.
US military participation in the operation will include guided-missile destroyers, more than 100 aircraft, unmanned systems and about 15,000 troops, US Central Command said.
The news sent oil prices tumbling, with Brent down nearly 2% to just over $106 a barrel and West Texas Intermediate falling below $100.
For its part, Iran has confirmed that it has received a response from the US to its latest peace proposal, which was brokered by Pakistan. Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Bagaei said the proposal contained 14 points and was aimed entirely at ending the war in the Middle East, including Lebanon. He emphasized that at this stage there are no negotiations on the country’s nuclear program.
Hostilities between the US and Iran, which began on February 28, have been temporarily suspended since a cease-fire took effect on April 7. On Saturday, Trump said he was considering Iran’s proposal but did not rule out renewed military strikes if Tehran “behaves inappropriately.” He also indicated that the US would like to eliminate Iran’s ability to produce missiles.
The Strait of Hormuz, through which about a fifth of the world’s energy supplies pass, was nearly blocked during the conflict. Around 1,000 merchant ships and 20,000 sailors are believed to be stranded in the area, with some crews already experiencing food shortages. Many of the ships affected belong to countries not involved in the conflict.
Iran’s control of the strait has also sent energy prices soaring and heightened concerns about the global economy and inflation. Analysts warn that the oil market may soon reach a tipping point with an even more serious spike in prices.
The US is considering the creation of an international coalition to coordinate efforts to open the strait, and Britain and France are also preparing a multinational mission under a sustainable ceasefire. Trump has previously criticized NATO allies for insufficient support in the war. Meanwhile, the Pentagon announced it would withdraw 5,000 US troops from Germany after German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said the US was being “humiliated” by Tehran.
