THE Filipino community in Papua New Guinea celebrated the annual Filipino food festival in Port Moresby on Saturday, showcasing different varieties of authentic Filipino cuisines
Festival representative Jhoy Juliaga said hundreds of Filipinos, as well as locals and foreigners, gathered at the Vision City Mall to experience the different flavours including cebu, bicol, halo-halo, bangbang, calabarzin, hand-made desserts and BBQ-style street food along with live music, karaoke and cultural entertainment.
“There are about 10 stalls selling the different cuisine during the week-long celebration as part of the Philippines Independence Day on June 12 that featured dishes from about 10 regions,” she said.
“The Filipinos love to eat, food is love so we host this annually, anywhere in the world where Filipinos live.
“The show is open to the public until Wednesday.”
Cassia Ferdez told The National that as Filipinos living abroad, such an event brings them closer to home and to interact with their friends and families.
“It also gives us the opportunity to taste the different food we don’t get to prepare ourselves on a daily basis,” she said.
“Most of our dishes are same as that of PNG but how we mix the flavours makes it a bit different.
“PNG locals are also seen buying food from the stalls, I have PNG friends who love Filipino food too.”
The event was also supported by Philippine Airlines, Skyline, Wonders Travel, Aurora Wellness Clinic and others.
