Volker Turk, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, in response to the increasing pressure of the European Union to deport Afghan refugees and the interaction of some European countries with the Taliban, emphasized that the forced return of these people to Afghanistan, considering the dire situation of human rights, is a violation of human principles and causes torture and the risk of death for the returnees.
In a frank conversation with “Euronews” channel, while expressing deep concern about the recent approaches of some European countries, Dr. Volker Türk made clear the position of the United Nations: “Given the very dire situation of human rights in Afghanistan, we are strongly against the forced return of refugees.”
These statements are made while the European Union has taken a stricter approach towards Afghan immigrants in recent months and, in a controversial move, is seeking to find solutions to speed up the process of deporting and repatriating them by holding meetings with representatives of the Taliban.
In response to possible arguments for deporting asylum seekers on security or legal grounds, Mr. Turk added: “If someone has committed a crime, there are European judicial frameworks to deal with it, and they should be brought to justice right here; But people cannot be returned to a land where they face the risk of torture, repression and organized human rights violations.”
