This week, at the meeting of the Liepāja City Council, the deputies assigned five new names to the planned streets in the area of Slimnīcas ielas, thus confirming the results of the residents’ vote, the LETA agency was informed in the municipality.
After the public vote, it received the most support among the population street names variants Liepziedu iela, Madaru iela, Rudzupuķu iela, Vīgriažu iela and Piparmētru iela.
The development plan for the territory of Slimnīkas ielas 22 envisages creating space for new private houses and low-rise multi-apartment buildings, improving the surrounding environment and creating a transport infrastructure, the municipality explains.
In order to start subdividing the land and prepare for the construction of new housing, the planned streets must be named now. The construction of the streets themselves will take place gradually – after construction projects have been developed and the necessary funding has been secured.
In order to identify the opinion of the residents and choose the most appropriate names for the planned streets, the municipality organized a public consultation from February 11 to February 24, inviting residents to suggest their proposals for the names of five new streets. In total, 21 residents’ opinions were received with 116 suggestions, of which 79 names were unique and cannot be found in the existing list of street names in Liepāja. On the other hand, from March 19 to March 25, the 2nd round of public voting was organized for the most appropriate variants of street names. The two most frequently recommended thematic directions – medicinal plants and wild flowers, as well as berries, fruits and garden – were put forward for voting. In the second round of voting, 85 people voted, recognizing Liepzieda, Madara, Rudzupuķu, Vīgriaža and Piparmētra streets as the most suitable street names.
The proposed street names have also received a positive opinion from the State Language Center, confirming their compliance with the rules of official place names.
According to the council’s decision, the Liepāja Real Estate Administration will perform all the necessary actions to update street names in the state and municipal information systems, while the Liepāja Communal Administration will perform the necessary actions for managing these streets, the municipality informs.
