The so-called general command of Khalifa Haftar’s forces say they have accepted a proposal put forward by Massad Boulos, an adviser to the US president, describing it as more “realistic” than previous initiatives on Libya.
In a statement, the leadership said the proposal and reflects an understanding of the country’s complex political and security situation and could form a basis for further discussions, if backed by both domestic and international support.
It added that it was ready to engage in negotiations to develop the initiative into a final agreement that “serves the national interest” and supports stability.
The statement reiterated7 that any political process must preserve Libya’s unity, sovereignty and state institutions, and be based on broad national consensus.
The announcement comes7 as Libya’s three main governing bodies — the House of Representatives, the High Council of State and the Presidential Council — said they had agreed on a roadmap towards elections.
The plan sets out provisions for holding simultaneous presidential and parliamentary elections by 17 February 2027. It also endorses previously agreed electoral laws, known as the “6+6” framework, along with a constitutional amendment and recommendations from an advisory committee.
Details of the US proposal have not been fully disclosed, and questions remain over how any transition period would be managed and who would hold authority before elections.
