The memory of the World Cup is not limited to decisive goals or miraculous saves, but rather extends to include strange moments that sparked widespread controversy and remained engraved in the minds of the fans. In the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, specifically on June 24, the Arena das Dunas stadium witnessed a non-football incident par excellence, the hero of which was the Uruguayan striker Luis Suarez.

The Italian and Uruguayan teams entered a decisive confrontation in the group stage, where Italy had the advantage of a draw to qualify, while Suarez’s teammates had no choice but to win. Tension prevailed in the atmosphere of the match, with the Italian defense being brave, led by legendary goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon, who denied Suarez a goal in the sixty-sixth minute.

As the match approached its end, specifically in the seventy-ninth minute, the famous contact occurred between Suarez and defender Giorgio Chiellini. The two players fell to the ground, and Chiellini got up angrily, revealing his shoulder to Mexican referee Marco Rodriguez, claiming that he had been bitten, while Suarez feigned pain by holding his teeth.

The referee did not make any immediate decision at that moment because there was no video technology ‘VAR’ at the time, and play continued with Diego Godin scoring the winning goal for Uruguay in the eighty-first minute. This goal gave Uruguay a pass to the second round and eliminated Italy, but the joy did not last long in the face of the media storm that followed the match.

The ‘Suarez bite’ became the first news item in the international press, and was not treated as a passing event given the player’s track record of this strange behaviour. Everyone remembered the incident of his biting the Moroccan player Othmane Bekal in 2010 with Ajax, and the incident of Serbian defender Ivanovic in the English Premier League in 2013.

In the face of this increasing pressure, FIFA was forced to intervene and open an urgent investigation into the incident based on television images. The decision came as a thunderbolt on the Uruguay national team, as the disciplinary committee imposed one of the harshest penalties in the history of the World Cup against the star nicknamed ‘The Pistol’.

The punishment included suspending Suarez from playing internationally for 9 matches, in addition to preventing him from practicing any sporting activity for a full four months. A fine of 100,000 Swiss francs was also imposed on him, which means the end of his World Cup career and his immediate departure from the national team camp in Brazil.

Frustration has been the cause of previous biting episodes in my career.

Suarez’s professional career was affected by this decision, as he had signed a contract to move to the Spanish club Barcelona that summer. The Catalan club and its fans were forced to wait until the end of the suspension period so that the player could officially appear in the “Blaugrana” shirt, which confused the team’s accounts at the beginning of the season.

For his part, Suarez initially tried to deny that he intentionally bit, describing what happened as a loss of balance and natural friction inside the penalty area. However, the spread of pictures and different angles of the cat later forced him to issue a public apology to the football family and to Italian defender Giorgio Chiellini, pledging not to repeat that.

Chiellini, despite his intense anger during the match, later showed sportsmanship by accepting Suarez’s apology. The Italian defender went even further when he criticized the harshness of FIFA’s punishment, considering that the four-month suspension was excessive and deprived the player of practicing his profession.

In his autobiography, Suarez revealed that the psychological pressure and frustration he felt in crucial moments was the main driver of these involuntary actions. He explained that his overwhelming desire to win sometimes got out of control and turned into outbursts of anger, which he expressed in a way that raised the world’s disapproval.

Surprisingly, this habit reappeared fleetingly even after many years. In April 2025, during a match with Inter Miami, Suarez almost accidentally bit the hand of his teammate Jordi Alba. Suarez retreated as soon as he realized that the hand belonged to his colleague and not his opponent, in a shot that brought back memories of the Natal World Cup.

Technically, Uruguay achieved a great achievement by eliminating Italy, but the collective memory of football fans reduced that match to just a ‘bite’. The shot became popular material for cartoons and satirical programmes, and continued to haunt Suarez in every international forum as a registered trademark linked to his name and the 2014 World Cup.

In conclusion, the Suarez and Chiellini incident remains a lesson in how a single moment of emotion can destroy the effort of an entire team and change the course of a talented player’s career. That moment revealed the fragility of stars under pressure, and proved that the World Cup not only commemorates champions, but also commemorates the most controversial moments.
