Vitinha was the player chosen to speak to journalists at the National Team’s first press conference on North American soil. The sweater 17 assumed Portugal’s ambition to hold a strong World Cup, without hiding the dream of winning an unprecedented title for the team from the corners.
Already installed in Miami with the rest of the group, the Paris Saint-Germain midfielder guaranteed that the team’s adaptation is going positively. “We have been feeling great. Miami is an unbelievable place, we are enjoying it and adapting well”he stated.
After a positive season with the French club, the Portuguese international revealed feel in good physical and mental condition to face the competition. Despite not wanting to give a grade to the season, he acknowledged that it was “very good” and showed a desire to finish in the best possible way. “I want to close the season with a flourish,” he said.
Regarding Portugal’s ambitions in the 2026 World Cup, Vitinha recognized the quality of the group, but refused to assume the Seleção as an absolute favorite. “We are candidates, without a doubt. We have a very strong team, but I wouldn’t say favorites”he explained, reinforcing the need to demonstrate quality on the field.
The midfielder also insisted on the importance of maintaining focus on the immediate and defended a prudent approach to the competition. “Competitions are won thinking about the near future. It’s cliché, but it works”, he stated, highlighting that the group’s thinking is centered on the meeting with DR Congo.
Asked about a possible victory in the World Cup and the possibility of this influencing a candidacy for the Ballon d’Or, Vitinha preferred not to entertain scenarios. “We haven’t even played the first game. What we can guarantee is a lot of dedication, commitment and work”he said.
One of the topics covered was also the bracelet worn by the national team players. Vitinha revealed that the accessory was offered by the Prime Minister, Luís Montenegro, during a meeting with the team, including the names of the players called up and a special reference to Diogo Jota. “We received it with great affection and chose to use it all of us”he explained.
The Portuguese international also spoke about Cristiano Ronaldo and highlighted the dedication of the Seleção captain. “Everything he does in terms of physical and mental preparation is incredible. He is an example for everyone”he stated, considering it a privilege to share a locker room with the striker.
Regarding the composition of the group led by Roberto Martínez, Vitinha believes that the combination of youth and experience can benefit Portugal. “It’s the best mix you can have. Having young people and a lot of experience in the same group can only give good results”he said.
On an individual level, the midfielder admitted that he would like to score his first goal for the National Team, although he made it clear that the collective objective is above any personal goal.al. “I would really like to score my first goal for the national team, but never ahead of what is best for the team”he assured.
