The United Workers Party (UWP) has announced plans to launch a Youth Symposium in the coming weeks, an initiative designed to provide support and opportunities for young people in Dominica.
Political Leader Dr. Thomson Fontaine made the announcement during a recent press conference, underscoring the party’s commitment to youth empowerment and economic reform.
Dr. Fontaine explained that the symposium will serve as a platform to engage young Dominicans, offering them resources and pathways to employment. He said the UWP’s broader vision is captured in its “10 pillars to shared prosperity,” a plan aimed at delivering strong economic growth, creating jobs, rescuing young people from economic hardship, and ensuring that all citizens can earn fair wages and salaries.
In addition to youth-focused initiatives, Dr. Fontaine outlined several economic measures the party intends to pursue. These include simplifying the tax system, removing the $10,000 environmental tax, raising the minimum wage to at least $12 per hour, and pursuing debt relief to reduce Dominica’s rising debt burden. He also pledged to prioritize local employment, ensuring that Dominican truckers, skilled workers, and tradesmen are given first access to projects within the country.
Fontaine added that the UWP’s vision centers on creating opportunities for young people, strengthening the workforce, and driving sustainable growth.
“Above all we will provide opportunities to our young people to put them to work and keep them here in Dominica to help us in the vision of developing this country,” he said.
