Ammar bin Jami
Ambassador Ammar Benjamea, Permanent Representative of Algeria to the United Nations in New York, was elected on Thursday, unanimously by member states, as President of the United Nations Economic and Social Council, for the 2027 session.
Bin Jammeh will succeed Nepali diplomat Lok Bahadur Thapa as head of the council. Which was established in 1946, to be one of the six main organs of the United Nations.

Ben Jama, who has more than five decades of diplomatic experience, previously served as Vice-President of the United Nations Economic and Social Council in the current 2026 session.
In 2025, the President of the Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, awarded Safir Benjameh the National Order of Merit. In recognition of his distinguished services and his prominent representation of Algeria in the United Nations.
The graduate of the National School of Administration was also chosen by the independent American platform “PassBlue” to be “Diplomat of the Year 2025 at the United Nations.”
