Tom Hanks said in the podcast “The Rest is Entertainment” that it is painful for him to watch a scene from the movie “Cast Away”, because he thinks he made a wrong acting move in it.
It is about the moment after Čak’s return home, when he returns the pocket watch that she gave him before the flight at Kela’s house.
In the 2000 film “Cast Away”, Kelly, played by Helen Hunt, gives Chuck Noland a watch with her photo before the trip, and he returns it to her four years later after surviving a plane crash in the Pacific Ocean and spending years on a desert island, reports B92.
Hanks explained why that scene was particularly uncomfortable for him. In the conversation he said:
“There’s one moment. I was sick in the movie ‘Cast Away’ when I came back and Chuck goes back to Kelly’s house and gives her her watch back. And if the movie is on TV, I get up and leave the room before that scene starts.”
The actor stated that at that moment he made a gesture that was false for the character and more his than Čak’s. He says that he was not aware of this during filming, but only when he saw the finished film for the first time.
“Cast Away” received two Oscar nominations in 2001, including one for best actor for Hanks, but the award then went to Russell Crowe for “Gladiator.” Hanks won a Golden Globe that same year for his role as a shipwrecked FedEx employee.
