In the heart of Huasteca Potosina a work emerges that combines nature and surrealism: the Edward James Sculpture Garden. This space is unique in its style in Latin America and an unmissable destination when visiting San Luis Potosi.
Located in the Magical Town of Xilitla, its giant structures, impossible stairs and trails are a dream and an unmissable attraction in this destination.
Named Artistic Monument of the Nation in 2012, the Edward James Sculpture Garden It was created by the British poet and artist, Edward Frank Willis James. In this work, the organic and the artificial coexist in the same space.
With the idea of having his own Garden of Eden, the artist began construction of the project after a frost that destroyed thousands of orchids he had planted in the area.
Without having defined plans, he built all the spaces in the garden as his imagination dictated, taking inspiration from his travels and the plants he loved.
As it is a space that was created solely for personal contemplation, many of the structures have a non-functional design. And in fact, Edward James He only visited the place during certain seasons.
After his death in 1984, construction of the project stopped and it was not until 1991 that the space was rehabilitated to open its doors to the public.
He Edward James Sculpture Garden It envelops visitors between giant flower columns, Gothic arches, stairs that end in the air and corridors that lead to natural pools or that simply seem to have no end.
Many of its structures were inspired by the orchids and the exuberance of the Huasteca Potosina.
Of the 37 hectares that make up the area and that are intended for ecological conservation, only 9 are part of the garden.
During the tour, which lasts approximately one and a half hours, visitors can see nearly 28 structures, among which the following stand out:
- “The stairway to heaven”
- “The Gate of San Pablo”
- Concrete “orchids”
- “The hands of the giant”
Waterfalls and natural turquoise pools flow right here.
