The Toyo Tunnel is seen as one of the most important parts of the transportation corridor that will connect the Puerto Antioquia Port, which is being established between Medellín and Urabá Bay on the Caribbean coast. According to officials, some journeys that can take 6 to 8 hours today will be reduced to approximately 4 hours thanks to the new route.
9.7 KILOMETER PASSAGE UNDER THE MOUNTAINS
The tunnel, which passes under the Western Andes, will be the longest road tunnel in the American continent when completed. However, the project is not just a single tunnel. It is aimed to completely renew the transportation network in the region by constructing many bridges, connection roads and additional crossing structures along the route.
After the excavation work was completed, the project started with the installation of electromechanical systems. Integration of ventilation, lighting, fire safety and smart signaling systems continues in the tunnel. These technologies are expected to play a critical role in safely managing heavy traffic flow.

FINAL PREPARATIONS ARE BEING MADE FOR THE OPENING
Authorities state that the tunnel will be put into service at full capacity after the technical studies carried out within the scope of the project are completed. Following the budget and equipment processes carried out between local governments and the central government, the opening is expected to take place between the end of 2026 and 2027.
According to experts, the Toyo Tunnel will not only accelerate transportation but also increase the trade capacity of the region. While it is aimed to carry out freight transportation faster and at lower cost thanks to the new port connections, the project is expected to contribute billions of dollars to the regional economy.
