He Secretary of Homeland Security (DHS) of USA, Markwayne Mullininsisted this Thursday that the drug cartels control the northern border of Mexico and defended the need to have physical barriers in the area because, he alleged, these have a positive impact.
At a hearing before the Appropriations Subcommittee of the House of Representatives for National Security, Mullin He repeated, as he has done in other appearances, that nine cartels have control of the border, operating through plazas.
“What we see with respect to the wall is that the cartels are constantly evolving and represent a threat. There is not a single inch of the northern border of Mexico that is not covered by a square. Nine cartels “they control the area,” he said.
These plazas, he explained, are managed by “plaza bosses” who constantly monitor border vulnerabilities to facilitate drug and human trafficking.
As he had warned in another hearing before the House Homeland Security Committee, Mullin said that it has been detected that the cartels are increasingly turning to drones and that a tunnel was recently discovered, for the first time in many years.
According to the DHS secretary, the construction of physical barriers on the border is impacting “the traditional routes“of the cartels, which has forced them to adapt their operating models. Mullin attributed the fact that a tunnel allegedly used for human and/or drug trafficking was recently discovered to the wall.
Mullin said that the DHS strategy involves using the wall, the physical barriers at the borderto push the cartels into what it calls “choke points.” He explained that by limiting the areas in which cartels can operate, the DHS You can better focus your staff and technology on high-traffic areas.
Mullin defended the need for autonomous towers, cutting-edge equipment and a strategy to combat drones. In this sense, he highlighted that the use of drones by cartels represents a significant vulnerability and announced that DHS is working to create a joint working group in order to better detect and mitigate these threats.
