US forces conducted an operation to intercept the Davina oil tanker under sanctions in the Indian Ocean, which is connected to Iran.
This was reported by the Indo-Pacific Command of the US military, writes Reuters.
Washington imposed a blockade on Iran’s maritime trade, while Tehran opened fire on ships to prevent them from passing through the Strait of Hormuz at the entrance to the Persian Gulf.
In recent months, US forces have intercepted several commercial and oil tankers in the Indian Ocean.
“We will continue global maritime enforcement to disrupt illicit networks and intercept vessels that provide material support to Iran wherever they operate,” Indo-Pacific Command wrote in a post on X.
The Davina, a supertanker capable of carrying up to 2 million barrels of crude oil, was hit by US sanctions in October 2024 for trading in Iranian oil, according to vessel tracking data.
The vessel, also known as the Lenore, was last seen on June 5 off the southern coast of Sri Lanka, MarineTraffic data showed on Friday. The ship was almost completely loaded with oil.
