SAN MARINO – The Secretariat of State for Internal Affairs “learns with deep condolences and emotion the news of the passing of Emma Bonino, a historic figure in Italian and European politics, who passed away today in Rome at the age of 78.
Over the course of over fifty years of uninterrupted public commitment, Emma Bonino has been a tireless, courageous and uncompromising voice in the defense of civil and human rights, standing out on the front line for her historic battles in favor of female self-determination, against female genital mutilation and for the universal moratorium on the death penalty. A long-time parliamentarian, Minister of Foreign Affairs, European Commissioner and founder of +Europa, she was able to combine a rigorous sense of institutions with an extraordinary civil passion, leaving an indelible mark on Italian political history and the pro-European debate.
The Secretariat of State for Internal Affairs would like to remember with affection and deep gratitude the special bond that united Emma Bonino to the Republic of San Marino. A relationship that culminated in the official meeting in January 2014, when, in his capacity as Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Italian Republic, he welcomed the then Secretary of State for Internal Affairs Pasquale Valentini to Rome. On that occasion, in addition to a fruitful discussion on the issues of cooperation and bilateral relations, Minister Bonino supported with firm conviction the pro-European vocation of San Marino, confirming the full availability of the Italian Government to accompany the Republic in its historic path of greater integration with the European Union.
