The prices of pistachios, which are known in Iran, Turkey and Sicily as “green gold”, due to increased demand and the inability to export from Iran, recently reached an eight-year high.
There are large quantities of pistachios in warehouses across Iran, whose export from the country has been stopped due to the war, and the almost complete interruption of the Internet in that country means that the company “Borna Foods”, which supplies some of the leading British retailers, cannot even contact suppliers, said the director of that company, Behnam Hejdaripur, reports Tanjug.
“Price fluctuations are extreme and it is very difficult to predict the market,” Hejdaripour said, according to Bloomberg.
Iran is the second largest producer of pistachios in the world, and the conflict in the Middle East has prevented their export at a time when demand has increased, among other things due to trends such as the popular Dubai chocolate, whose main ingredient is pistachios.
