PARAMARIBO — More than 150 Surinamese athletes are preparing for a sporting meeting with Guyana and French Guyana. Paramaribo will be the battleground for the 2026 Inter-Guyanese Games from Friday to Sunday, where young people from the three countries will meet each other in the sporting competition.
The delegations from Guyana and French Guiana will travel to Suriname from Thursday and return home on Monday. The School Sports Federation Suriname Foundation (SSFS) is responsible for the organization of the event. Boys and girls under the age of 18 participate in the Games.
“In addition to the sporting achievements, the exchange between young people from the three countries is central”
The official program includes chess, athletics, swimming, volleyball, basketball and futsal. In addition, boxing and judo are included as demonstration sports. In boxing, Suriname and Guyana compete against each other, while in judo, Suriname and French Guiana face each other. The three countries compete against each other in the other sporting disciplines.
In addition to the sporting achievements, the exchange between young people from the three countries is particularly central. By exercising together, participants get to know each other better and have the opportunity to make new contacts and strengthen existing friendships.
The opening ceremony will take place on Friday in the Anthony Nesty Sports Hall. Most matches are also played at this location, including volleyball, basketball and indoor football, as well as boxing matches. The chess matches take place at Residence Inn. The judo demonstration will also be held on the opening day at the Ring Sport Center.
By organizing the Inter-Guyanese Games, the SSFS wants to stimulate sporting exchange between young people from Suriname, Guyana and French Guiana and contribute to mutual understanding, cooperation and friendship between the three countries.
