Tageblatt: Of course we have to talk about it. Her predecessor in office was her husband Michel Wolter. This caused a lot of discussion outside the community. How do you see this situation yourself?
Nadine Braconnier: In Käerjeng the situation was known to most people and was not a major scandal. I have been a member of the party for many years and president of the local section. Then this big media hype arose. There was talk of nepotism, political calculation and similar things. I often thought to myself that reality is actually much simpler. At some point my husband said, “I can’t do this forever.” He’s similar to me: When he feels like he’s accomplished everything he set out to do, he looks for a new phase in his life. I always said: If you stop at some point, then maybe I’ll run. But I didn’t expect to be voted fourth at all. Some say “only fourth place”, but on a list of fifteen candidates I don’t think that’s a bad thing at all. Of course it seems unusual that my predecessor is also my husband. I understand that. But ultimately that doesn’t change the democratic process. If someone else had been elected fourth, that person would be sitting here today. If I hadn’t been elected, I wouldn’t be mayor today.
