This Saturday, June 13, Qatar drew 1-1 with Switzerland, in the first round of Group B of the 2026 World Cup, in a duel marked by competitive balance and a dramatic outcome in the final minutes.
The Swiss team took the lead in the first half, through Breel Embolo, who converted a penalty in the 17th minute, putting the Europeans at an advantage at a stage in which they controlled possession of the ball and created more chances of danger.
However, when everything seemed headed towards a Swiss victory, Qatar responded in the final moments. Boualem Khoukhi headed in in added time (90+5′) to restore equality and secure an important point for Julen Lopetegui’s team.
Switzerland dominated large periods of the match and ended with more opportunities created, but showed difficulties in finishing and ended up penalized by the Qatari reaction in the final stretch. Qatar showed resilience and took advantage of one of the last offensive moves to avoid defeat.
With this result, both teams add one point in Group B, which also includes Canada and Bosnia-Herzegovina, keeping the qualification for the next phase of the World Cup completely open.
