Instead of on Saturday, travelers to Ibiza only went back to Switzerland on Sunday. Reason was one medical emergency on board a Swiss plane that had just landed on the Balearic island. There was a while taxiing Baby collapsed and fainted. What followed was extremely emotionally challenging for the crew and led to the cancellation of the flight.
So the pilot informed the passengers
You can hear why in a video recorded by a passenger. The pilot can be heard in it. He speaks to the passengers and apologizes for the cancellation of the flight the evening before. «When we arrived here in Ibiza yesterday (Saturday) there was an emergency with a baby. The crew reacted immediately and began resuscitation. The baby was saved and then taken to the hospital in Ibiza in an ambulance.”
To protect the crew, the pilot then decided not to start the journey home to Zurich until the next day (today, Sunday). “This is not an excuse, but I hope you understand our situation,” the pilot said in conclusion.
This is what Swiss says about the incident
Upon request, Swiss confirmed the incident. The flight was carried out with a Swiss airline on behalf of the sister airline Edelweiss. “The child’s mother asked for help after landing; the child’s health status was unclear at the time. Our crew reacted immediately and, together with passengers, initiated resuscitation measures.” The child was conscious again when the medical emergency services arrived.
“The parents, our crew and the helping passengers were relieved that we were able to hand the child over to the medical staff for further care.” The passengers sitting nearby also played an important role in ensuring that the child was able to receive help quickly: “They behaved calmly and stayed seated. This meant that the helpers were able to look after the child as quickly as possible and without distraction, despite the hectic situation. In a situation like this, every second is valuable and we are grateful that the helpers were able to act immediately,” said Swiss. Swiss does not provide any information about the current state of health.
“An incident like this doesn’t go unnoticed by our crew members. They therefore decided last night that they would not be able to take the immediately planned return flight as planned. The airline very much regrets the circumstances that have arisen for the passengers. “But we don’t compromise on safety. Instead, we rescheduled the flight today – the plane landed in Zurich on Sunday afternoon.”
“There was a great deal of understanding”
There was great understanding among the passengers for the emergency situation, says the passenger’s sister, who shared the pilot’s speech with 20 minutes. How dramatic the situation on the plane was can be seen from the pilot’s announcement. “You can hear the pilot, his voice is very emotional. I can very well imagine that it would not have been possible for the pilot and crew to continue the flight in such a situation. But “thank God it had a positive outcome.”
Her sister and the other passengers would not have been able to board the plane the evening before. There was an immediate announcement that the flight had to be canceled. Then everything happened very quickly: “The passengers were taken to accommodation very quickly,” says the reader.
