Students lift the strike at the Universidad del Valle: this June 24, classes are expected to resume at the alma mater in the south of Cali

Since last June 2, students from the Universidad del Valle had declared themselves in a permanent assembly to support Ivan Cepeda for the presidential elections. Due to the assembly, classes at the university have been suspended until this June 23, student spokespersons reported that academic activities would resume at the alma mater of 35,000 students.

The authorities in Cali intervened in facilities that were vandalized on June 21.

“Guarantees have been sought regarding degree work grades and low academic performance that are not computed during this semester, but in addition to being able to have one more week for the cancellation of subjects and semester,” said another spokesperson, Jampier Meneses.

Meanwhile, the rector of the university has been reporting that no official employee or worker of the institution has stopped providing their administrative functions, as have the professors in extension and research areas.

“In the midst of these events, an explosive potato, a death device, hit a vehicle that was traveling in the vicinity of the Meléndez campus and could physically affect and compromise the lives of the passengers,” said the institution’s directives. In the private vehicle, a 3-year-old girl and her grandmother were in danger and, fortunately, were not injured. They were left in a daze.

“The University Management emphatically rejects, once again, these acts of violence that threaten life, the most precious gift, human rights and that damage the image of the university before the society of Cali and Valle del Cauca,” noted a statement from Univalle regarding those disturbances, while the university was still without classes.

“These events occurred outside the campus of the university city of Meléndez, where in practice there are no students due to the strike that they recently agreed to, which is a notorious and public fact,” the statement added.

However, the videos that circulated on social networks contradict the statement that the events occurred outside the campus, as the hooded men confronted uniformed police officers from inside Univalle, a few meters from the red car in which the girl and the grandmother were riding.

“Therefore, one might think that the protagonists of these violent actions are people strangers to the university community and confirm, once again, that the university is a victim of violence and not a victimizer, and that they are related to what happened in recent days at the National and Antioquia universities,” the directives indicated in that statement.
