According to Russian media reports, dozens of flights were canceled or delayed at Moscow airports, and Vnukovo airport was the most affected. There are also delays in railway traffic.
Many trees fell under the weight of wet snow, especially in the center of the city, while cars were damaged and sidewalks were impassable, according to reporters from the French news agency AFP in Moscow.
“Real winter is back,” Russian TV channel Pervy Kanal announced.
There were snowdrifts in the suburbs of Moscow, and parked cars were covered with several centimeters of snow.
Moscow authorities said on Telegram that they expect further deterioration of the weather during the day with heavy rainfall and strong gusts of wind. Mayor Sergej Sobyanin urged residents to exercise caution when moving outdoors.
The orange danger level declared by the Russian Meteorological Center for Moscow and its surroundings is the second highest. According to the Spanish news agency EFE, Muscovites woke up today to the sight of a new snow cover up to ten centimeters high, although they had already had a real spring in the previous weeks.
In the suburbs of Moscow, two people died when their vehicle skidded on the road and collided with a truck.
