As soon as the official celebration of Sudamja began in Split, the national drama festival – the 36th theater manifestation Marulićevi dani – was ceremonially concluded with the awarding of the best ones and the performance of the opera “Ero s onoga svijeta” produced by the Croatian National Theater Split.
An excellent program that presented the best achievements of contemporary drama and author’s theater lasted for ten days, and the “Marul” awards were awarded in a number of categories. With an expert evaluation jury under the chairmanship Zrinka Cvitešićconsisting of: Lada Kaštelan, Aida Bukvić, Romana Brajša and Luka Cerjanthe award for the best acting performance of the jury of Slobodna Dalmacija was also awarded.
Let’s remind you that during Marulić’s ten days, 13 plays were performed – it started with “The Lord Glembej”, ended with “Ero” – and in the meantime: “Father, daughter and the Holy Spirit”, “Mothers”, “Son, mother and father sit at the table and are silent for a long time”, “Acid/Acid”, “Disappearing”, “Sniper”, “Always be like a dragon”, “Wooden birds”, “Kamov, earthquake”, “The house is big, can’t se ona nosit”, “Matija” and “Sigura kuća”.
The jury of Slobodna Dalmacija, which consisted of three female readers: Jadranka Stančin Babić, Sanela Marković and Stella Švendaunanimously decided after watching the entire program to award the award for the best acting performance to a young actress, a 16-year-old girl.
– We unanimously chose the young actress Klara Fiolić from the play “Wooden Birds” (co-produced by the Croatian National Theater in Varaždin and the Croatian National Theater in Zagreb) for the Slobodna Dalmacija readers’ jury award for the best acting performance at the 36th Marulić days. We were impressed by the maturity of her role, the way she presented it fully, including the language aspect and dealing with the dialect. In fact, she charmed us already at the beginning, when she sang. Of all the top actresses and actors, she left the deepest impression on us – said Švenda, a reader of Slobodna Dalmacija, on behalf of the three-member jury.
In the play “Wooden Birds”, namely, the actress Klara Fiolić portrays the character of a smart sixteen-year-old girl who is looking for her place in the family under the burden of patriarchal inheritance, her father’s alcoholism and a broken, helpless mother who pushes Nadica (Klara Fiolić) along the same path, in the middle without life choices. The young actress Fiolić built her role during the play with an excellent performance, sometimes defiant in the attempt of ambitious plans towards the “city that whitens over the Balatin”, and in some situations exhausted due to the silent resistance that was reduced in the cage of rural entanglement. The actress performs the scenes in the factory without perspective naturally and convincingly. Klara Fiolić conveys Nadica’s song in the first and last part of the play with the strength and melancholy of her voice, which wails in her longing to escape from the cage in which she was suffocated, the audience notes. Because of everything they experienced, the members of the jury had no doubts as to whom they would give the highest score. The journalist of Slobodna Dalmacija presented the award to the director of the play “Wooden Birds”. Ivan Plazibatwho received her on Klara’s behalf since she was not present.

– This year’s Marulić days have once again shown how much the audience recognizes and appreciates domestic theatrical creativity. Split was once again a meeting place for artists, professionals and the public. This kind of interest confirms the importance of the festival on the national theater scene – said Župić, noting enough that the audience’s interest was great for every festival performance.
The festival has officially closed Željko Primorachead of the Administrative Department for Culture, Sports and Technical Culture of the Split-Dalmatia County.
– I am happy about the fact that this year’s Marulić days saw the largest number of works registered so far. It is especially pleasing to know that applications have also arrived from neighboring countries, and that in the largest number ever. This is recognition not only of this festival as an extremely strong drama festival, but also confirms the fact that Croatian authors are still extremely relevant both in their homeland and abroad. Split, as the center of this festival, can be proud of its heritage, its Renaissance and humanist culture and tradition, which gave birth to the great Marko Marulić. On these foundations, we continue the contemporary Marulić days, which we will continue to build year after year in order to make them the best ambassadors of Croatian culture – said Primorac.
