The Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Axios website announced at dawn on Thursday that the US-Iranian memorandum of understanding had officially entered into force, after it was signed electronically by the presidents of the two countries, Masoud Pezeshkian and Donald Trump, in a surprising step that ended the state of anticipation that had prevailed during the past hours.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Ismail Baghaei said, “The memorandum of understanding has now become fully official,” stressing that “it was decided to be signed digitally, and the text has already been signed by the presidents of America and Iran,” instead of the manual signature that was scheduled during the meeting in Switzerland on Friday, or through the negotiators, as was previously planned.
The Axios website quoted American officials as confirming that “the United States and Iran electronically signed a memorandum of understanding today to end the war,” confirming that the memorandum would enter into force immediately after signing, which represents a decisive development in relations between the two parties after a conflict that lasted about four months.
On the other hand, US President Donald Trump said yesterday, Wednesday, that the United States will keep its forces in the Gulf “for a period” after the agreement, and he added in statements to reporters in Paris that if other countries possess ballistic missiles, “it is a bit unfair” for Iran not to possess any missiles, referring to possible provisions in the agreement related to military balance.
