Seven applied for the new office of Iceland’s sheriff, which will be established at the beginning of 2027. Among the applicants are two sheriffs and a former police chief.
It was decided at the beginning of the year that the nine sheriff’s offices should be combined into one office, and the position of sheriff was advertised for applications at the end of March. The new position will be officially established at the beginning of 2027.
It was specifically stated that the applicant should not expect to work in the capital area and is appointed to the position for five years at a time. About 250 employees will work at the office in many parts of the country.
- Einar Jónsson, division manager of the enforcement and exchange division and deputy commissioner in the capital area.
- Jóhann Gunnar Þórarinsson, director of the licensing and inspection of accommodation at the sheriff’s office in the capital area.
- Kristín Þórðardóttir, county commissioner in the South and appointed county commissioner in Vestmannaeyjar.
- Sigríður Kristinsdóttir, the sheriff in the capital area.
- Skúli Hakim Thoroddsen Mechiat, legal representative at the sheriff’s office in Vestfjörður.
- Úlfar Lúðvíksson, former police chief in Suðurnes.
- Winter team Þór Stefánsson, office manager of the service office in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
In press release The Cabinet says that the establishment of a new magistrate’s office is a major change in Icelandic administration.
