Mexican authorities are investigating a mayor and several people for an alleged kidnapping scheme to collect a million-dollar ransom.
The Attorney General’s Office of the State of Mexico reported that the mayor of Tenancingo, Nancy Nápoles Pacheco, is being investigated for allegedly simulating her kidnapping with the aim of obtaining a ransom of 40 million pesos (about US$2.3 million). According to the investigations, the money would have been used to cover an alleged embezzlement in the municipal administration.
Several people have already been arrested in the case, including alleged collaborators of the alleged simulation, while the mayor must appear in court on July 9. In addition, the authorities notified anti-corruption bodies to investigate a possible impact on public funds.
