Doha – Al Raya:
The Ministry of Education and Higher Education, represented by the School Canteens Committee, announced the opening of pre-qualification for food companies and institutions wishing to supply food to school canteens in various government schools, in preparation for the academic year 2026-2027, as part of its efforts to provide healthy and safe meals for students in accordance with the highest standards of quality and food safety.
The Ministry confirmed that this step comes within its annual plan to ensure the provision of balanced and diverse food options within government schools, which contributes to enhancing the general health of students and supporting a stimulating educational environment that helps academic achievement and healthy physical development.
She explained that companies wishing to apply for qualification must be registered in the commercial registry and possess a valid commercial license issued by the competent authorities, in addition to having the necessary material and human capabilities to provide the service. The Ministry also stipulated that food meals be prepared and processed within an approved establishment that has obtained official approvals, without the use of sub-suppliers in preparing prepared foods, such as pies, sandwiches, salads, and appetizers.
The Ministry stated that qualified suppliers will begin supplying food with the start of students’ work hours for the new academic year, starting on Sunday, August 30, 2026, noting that the schools have been distributed into different geographical groups, with each company being qualified to provide service to a specific number of schools according to its operational capabilities.
With regard to health requirements, the Ministry stressed the need for food establishments to meet all approved health conditions and have obtained the approval of the competent authorities, with the commitment of suppliers to provide valid health certificates and licenses to practice the profession for all workers in school canteens and food establishments.
