    CAREERS

NEVER give up, trust your journey, and continue working hard toward your goals.

Those were the words from Belinda Yapen, who has been appointed Country Manager and Cluster Transformation Lead for Solomon Brewery Limited, becoming the first Papua New Guinean woman to hold this role.

Hailing from Madang, Yapen’s appointment marked a significant milestone in her personal career, and SP Brewery’s commitment to developing local talent and empowering women.

Yapen grew up in Madang, completing her primary and secondary education there before attending Malala Secondary School for Grades 11 and 12, an experience she describes as life-changing.

“Being away from home and the comforts of urban life taught me independence and strengthened my decision-making skills. The discipline and structure of the school played a key role in shaping my character,” Yapen recalled.

In 1996, she pursued tertiary studies at the Papua New Guinea University of Technology, graduating with a bachelor’s degree in accountancy. Although she initially aspired to become an economist, her shift into accounting laid the foundation for a successful career.

Yapen’s rise to leadership is rooted in determination, resilience, and her ability to balance both motherhood and a demanding career in finance. Like many working mothers, she understands the challenge of managing professional aspirations alongside family responsibilities.

“This journey was challenging, but my family has been my greatest source of strength,” she said.

“Their love, patience, and unwavering support have carried me through every challenge, and for that, I am deeply grateful. Therefore, I firmly believe that with the right support, understanding, and encouragement, we can pursue our dreams and achieve them,” Yapen revealed.

She began her professional career with a government agency as a graduate accountant, where she developed strong expertise in taxation and auditing.

“Working in taxation was both challenging and rewarding. It allowed me to contribute to nation building while learning from experienced professionals,” she explained.

She joined SP Brewery in 2011 in the Internal Audit function, beginning what would become a decade long journey of growth and leadership development. Over the years, she has held a range of roles within the finance function and gained international exposure through assignments across Asia and leadership programmes in Europe.

Following Heineken’s acquisition in 2013, SP Brewery became part of the Heineken operating company in the Asia Pacific region, creating further opportunities for professional development.

“Since 2013, my career has expanded across multiple areas within the finance function, including insurance, risk and controls, strategic management, budgeting and forecasting, accounting and reporting, business partnering, project management, and, most recently, sustainability reporting.

“I have also had the privilege of working across Asia on short term assignments and attending leadership development programs in Europe,” she said.

“Being part of a resilient team that has navigated economic highs and lows while continuing to grow stronger has been rewarding.”

Yapen, however, credits much of her growth to the mentorship she has received throughout her career at SP Brewery.

“The most important milestone in my career has been the opportunity to learn and grow under exceptional leaders, both expatriates and Papua New Guineans, who have contributed not only to my professional development but have also demonstrated genuine care for people,” she joyfully said.

She acknowledges mentors who have significantly influenced her journey, including Stan Joyce, Shun Chou, Archer Ning, and current Finance Manager Adnane Islam Chekirine.

Her proudest achievements include driving business growth, improving productivity, and developing people through cost saving initiatives, project management, disciplined budget control, and importantly, knowledge transfer to younger professionals.

As she steps into her new role at Solomon Brewery, Solomon Islands’ first and largest beer producer established since 1993, Yapen is focused on driving business performance, strengthening teams, and contributing to national development.

“I am honoured to join the remarkable women leaders at Solomon Brewery who have been successfully leading the company. I look forward to building on our strong legacy and contributing meaningfully to the country’s economic growth,” an emotional Yapen said.
