— The Traffic Department of the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force is investigating a fatal traffic accident that claimed the life of Mr. Keshawn Merchant of Pond Hill, Gingerland, Nevis. The incident, which occurred on Monday, June 22, marks the first road fatality recorded in Nevis for 2026.
According to a press release by the Police Force, the collision occurred at approximately 9:10 p.m. Preliminary investigations indicate that Mr. Merchant was riding motor scooter PB3431 from Pinney’s toward Charlestown along the Island Main Road when, upon reaching the vicinity of Old Hospital Road, he reportedly lost control of the vehicle and collided with a concrete wall on the mountainside of the roadway.
Responding officers arrived at the scene and discovered Mr. Merchant lying motionless on the roadway. The scooter sustained extensive damage consistent with a high-impact collision.
Dr. Tivone Browne examined the body at the scene and pronounced Mr. Merchant dead at approximately 9:36 p.m. Police said an autopsy will be conducted to determine the exact cause of death.
The Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force also addressed allegations circulating on social media suggesting that police officers or police vehicles were involved in the incident. According to investigators, no evidence has been found to substantiate those claims. Police further stated that no police vehicle was in the area at the time of the collision and that all police units observed at the scene arrived in response to the accident.
The Traffic Department said investigations into the circumstances surrounding the crash are ongoing and urged members of the public to refrain from speculation and the spread of unverified information while inquiries continue.
The Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force extended condolences to the family and friends of Mr. Merchant during this difficult time.
